So I was thinking today, what will happen to the kids? When I was growing up (which was only just a short spell ago) we had to start at the bottom and work our way up the food chain. I began as a bagger in the supermarket at 15, then a cashier, then a bookkeeper and finally a front-end manager. I stopped there for 2 reasons: the hot girls were always cashiers, and I was going off to college. Would I have been able to immediately become a manager at 15? I think not.

So what happens in the tech or business field in say ten years? Once all of the entry-level jobs go somewhere else, where will the kids start from?

When I started working in the computer field, I started for a short time as? a help desk representative. While for me this only lasted about ten days, for many this is their way “in” to the computer business. It builds a good foundation for troubleshooting, and even more important, and can teach many business relationship skills. As more of this work goes elsewhere, where will the kids learn these skills? Where will the kids begin?

Do we want the kids to graduate right into a manager job? No, they need a foundation. So I ask, where will they get this foundation?
