The ghost of presidential elections past will raise its protectionist head in 2004.
Just as Ross Perot’s famous “sucking sound” remark fueled opposition a decade ago to free trade, so today there is rising concern about service jobs fleeing the country through offshore outsourcing.
The conflicting political and economic issues involved in the trend will surely butt heads in the upcoming presidential-election year.
“Organizations are beginning to feel the political heat from a backlash toward offshore outsourcing,” said Debashish Sinha, a managing director at San Ramon-based global outsourcing consultancy neoIT Inc.
